Canada and Vietnam Hold Bilateral Defence Consultation in 2023

Since November 2017, Vietnam and Canada have strengthened their comprehensive partnership and witnessed significant growth in bilateral ties. Defence cooperation between the two countries has yielded positive results in various areas, including delegation exchange, training, United Nations peacekeeping, and maritime security.

The Vietnam – Canada Bilateral Defence Consultation 2023 was co-chaired by Major General Vu Thanh Van, Director of the Foreign Relations Department under the Ministry of National Defence of Vietnam, and Peter Hammerschmidt, Assistant Deputy Minister of Canada’s Department of National Defence.

This virtual event took place during the 50th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations (1973-2023).

During the consultation, both sides acknowledged the growing importance of defence cooperation in the Vietnam-Canada Comprehensive Partnership. They reviewed the progress made in defence cooperation based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2019 and the 3-year bilateral defence cooperation plan for 2021-2023.

Both sides expressed their commitment to continue cooperating in areas such as delegation exchange, dialogue, consultation, training, UN peacekeeping, defence industry, and addressing war aftermath in Vietnam.

They also pledged to support each other in regional and international security forums, including the ASEAN Regional Forum and the Shangri-La Dialogue, for the peace, stability, and development of the region and the world.

Furthermore, the two sides agreed to collaborate closely in preparation for the second Vietnam-Canada Defence Policy Dialogue at the deputy ministerial level in September this year.

Canada, as a country bordered by the Pacific Ocean, has a significant interest in the region. It will work with other countries to contribute to peace, stability, and development in the Pacific.
